General Motors Company was established on September 16, 1908 and is one of the world’s largest companies in terms of turnover and number of employees. It is the world’s largest vehicle manufacturer and employs about 280,000 people globally. In fact it has been the global automotive sales leader since 1931.
GM currently has manufacturing operations in 32 countries and its vehicles are sold in more than 190 countries.
In addition GM also has technology collaborations with BMW AG of Germany and Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan, and vehicle manufacturing ventures with several automakers around the world, including Toyota, Suzuki, Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. of China, AVTOVAZ of Russia and Renault of France.

GM currently has four main areas of operation namely:
General Motors North America (GMNA);
General Motors Latin America Africa & Middle East (GMLAAM);
General Motors Asia Pacific (GMAP);
General Motors Europe (GME) divided into Eastern & Western Europe.
General Motors North America (GMNA) designs, manufactures and markets vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
General Motors South Africa is part of the Latin America, Africa and Middle East region referred to as LAAM.
Latin American Countries include: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador and Venezuela with sales offices in Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Kenya.
The Middle East regional marketing organization in Dubai supports distribution, after sales, and marketing efforts in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen.
General Motors Asia Pacific (GMAP) has assembly facilities and sales operations in 14 countries in the Asia Pacific region. The main manufacturing and assembly operations are sited in Australia, China, Indonesia, India and Thailand
GM Japan, together with the Hong Kong operation is a wholly owned Japanese subsidiary and plays a vital marketing function in Asia. It also supports the Asian Technical Centre (ASTEC), which provides application engineering to Japanese Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s).
GM Europe (GME) markets the Opel, Vauxhall, Saab, Cadillac and Chevrolet brands. GME has sales operations in 25 countries and 23 production and assembly facilities in 14 countries in Europe.
