Stevan (Steve) J. Koch was appointed as Latin America, Africa, Middle East (LAAM) Vice
President of African Operations and President and Managing Director of GM South Africa on 1 July 2007.
He was born on September 14,1951 in Saginaw Michigan, he joined what was then called Saginaw Steering
Gear Division on June 16, 1969 as a General Motors Institute cooperative student, receiving a Bachelor of
Science degree in Industrial Administration in 1974. At that time, he was awarded a GM Fellowship and
received his master’s degree in Business Administration from Harvard University in 1976.
In 1984, he was appointed Senior Administrator of Component Planning at the Corporate Marketing and Product
Planning Staff in Detroit. From 1984 to 1988 Koch served in several capacities including Manager of Assembly
Capacity Planning and Manager of Short Term Market Analysis and Scheduling. In 1988, he was promoted to Director
of North American Commercial Vehicle Planning, a position which he held until 1990 when he was appointed President
and Managing Director of GM Zaire.
In 1991, Koch returned to Detroit as General Director of Sales and Marketing for Africa within the Latin America,
Africa and Middle East Operations (LAAM) group. In 1992, he was appointed Manager of the newly formed Service Parts
Business Unit at GM do Brazil and was transferred to São Paulo. In 1994 he become Director of the After Sales Operations
for GMB, and in 1995, he was promoted to Director of Sales and Marketing for GMB. In January 1997 Koch was appointed
Executive Director, Sales and Marketing for LAAM. On September 1, 2000 he was appointed VP LAAM and Regional Director, Africa and Middle East Operations
headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
